A baseball bat is a simple security tool, but if you need something better, start with a .22 varmint rifle, progress to a 12g shotgun, and cap it off with a good hunting rifle. Get the biggest capacity magazines available in case you have more than one target.
At minimum, take a hunter safety course, but there are more advanced classes available. Check with your local gun club.
