In climates that require a lot of heating, a wood stove is a life saver, if you have a wood supply. Either your own woods to cut wood and let it dry for the next season, or scrap wood from a sawmill or other materials like broken up pallets, or construction debris. Again, propane is an ideal survival fuel, as it stores pretty much forever.
For cooling, fans can help, orienting your house for cooling breezes if possible, or for extreme hot climates, even air conditioning if you have a big generator and lots of fuel, or an honking big solar array and a big inverter and battery bank.
